Sign Language Australia is happy to announce that one-to-one or small group private tutors are available from December 2018 to December 2019.

Individual tuition will focus on the following diverse topics:

  1. conversational practice in Auslan (either basic or complex) for learners of Auslan;
  2. learning about language (understanding of basic grammar in Auslan) for learners of Auslan
  3. increasing vocabulary related to specific fields such as medical, health, high school subjects, signed language teaching, food etc. or as requested;
  4. increasing awareness of Auslan variation particularly southern dialect and local dialect (South Australian regional language in Auslan) for teachers and tutors of Auslan who grew up in other states or grew up as an oral deaf person;
  5. providing personal support for people who are studying an introduction to sign linguistics (all the linguistic levels: phonetics and phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and discourse) and who are interested in increasing their understanding of these specific topics;
  6. increasing an understanding of language assessment (principles and classroom practices) for teachers of Auslan who are interested in continuing their studies in this specific subject, e.g. understanding what the difference between these concepts (test, assessment & measurement) are;
  7. providing personal support towards high school students who are studying Auslan as a subject (The Australian Curriculum: Languages) or SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education – Stage 1 and/or 2) or towards potential teachers of Auslan who are keen to increase their knowledge of the curriculum related to ACARA or SACE;
  8. providing professional support re: translations from English into Auslan (genre can be a wide range);
  9. providing professional support for people who are studying Certificates (from II to IV) offered by TAFE SA;
  10.  increasing an understanding of English glossing including Auslan transcription symbols.
Who are our private tutors?
Barry Priori (Deaf)
Personal and educational experience:
  1. native-like speaker of Auslan
  2. TAE (Training and Assessment) and having 28 years of Auslan teaching and tutoring experience
  3. studied bridging course in basic Auslan linguistics and Deaf Culture
  4. experience in working as a BSSO
  5. intensive experience in interacting with Deaf Auslan speakers
Tuition Experience: 
  1. providing conversational practice in Auslan
  2. tutoring signs related to Auslan variation particularly southern dialect and local dialect (South Australian regional language in Auslan)
  3. providing support for translations into Auslan at a basic level
  4. tutoring specialised vocabulary relating to medial, health, workplace and theatre.
Samantha Wilson (Deaf)
 
Personal and educational experience:
  1. native-like speaker of Auslan
  2. studied linguistics at La Trobe University
  3. intensive experience in interacting with Deaf Auslan speakers
  4. experience in working as a translator and actress in theatre

Donovan Cresdee (Deaf)
Personal and educational experience:
  1. native speaker of Auslan (Deaf ethnicity) and second language speaker of ASL (American Sign Language)
  2. university degrees related to second language teaching and linguistics (Graduate Diploma in Education, Masters of Applied Linguistics and Doctor of Philosophy in Education) and experience in sociolinguistics in signed languages
  3. TAE (Training and Assessment) and having 25 years of Auslan teaching and tutoring experience
  4. delivered a short term training course design for deaf tutor trainees
  5. translated from English (written) to Auslan (both signed and glossed) for a wide range of genre)
  6. tutored specialised vocabulary relating to high school subjects
  7. tutored Auslan as a subject at a high school level (Yrs 8, 9, 10, 11 &12)
  8. delivered a short term training course focussing on an introduction to sign linguistics (all the linguistic levels: phonetics and phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and discourse) for teachers of the deaf, BSSOs, and tutors of Auslan.
  9. provided personal support towards those who wanted to understand English glossing
