This course will focus on developing visual communication strategies to build basic vocabulary skills in Auslan, and understanding Auslan as a visual/gestural language and Deaf Culture. The course is suitable for those who have never learned Auslan signs or alphabet fingerspelling before. Those who have some Auslan skills or would like to refresh their Auslan skills are recommended to take Auslan Skills Level 1 course.
To enable learners to understand what Auslan and Deaf Culture are and develop alphabet
fingerspelling skills (both receptive and productive skills), new basic vocabulary such as number-related signs, signs for days of the week and weekend, plus family-related signs.
Student workbooks will be provided. When a tutor gives a talk about what Auslan and Deaf Culture are, an Auslan/spoken English interpreter will be provided.
